[Marcel Duchamp]
Glass, normally purely functional as a layer of protection between the work and the observer, becomes now of primary importance. Fracture, cutting-line or hole brings the attention back to this forgotten sculptural element, which was already constitutive in the first place.
The smooth surface consists of a mirroring aspect but also functions as a permeable wall. It creates distance as well as intimacy. The position of the viewer is ambivalent. The onlooker is partially excluded by the mirror effect from the protection behind the glass, in contrast it includes the surrounding space by the reflection involved and making the viewer a participant.
Nothing is 100% transparent, only a cut or hole lets in the light and the never ending universe stream in unhindered.
