Inside the darkened room a pause-pulse relay switches every 2 minutes between two different sound/light situations. Slide and film projectors rattle and buzz before everything falls into silence, and then start all over again. The projected light images represent starry skies, the moon and a solar eclipse, made over a number of years. In the middle of the big ‘sleeping aria’ (mosquito-net) a pedestal is situated, with a silk cloth and a globe on top. Along the walls, large paper sheets with text cut-outs are arranged, quoting the philosopher Martin Heidegger (from Vorträge und Aufsätze), from which also the title of this installation (spacing and extent) is derived.

In de verduisterde ruimte werd met behulp van een pauze-puls relais iedere 2 minuten geschakeld tussen twee licht/geluid situaties. Dia- en filmprojectoren ratelen en zoemen om vervolgens bijna stil te vallen waarna alles weer opnieuw begint. De lichtprojecties omvatten opnames van sterren, maan en zonsverduistering welke ik in de loop van een aantal jaren maakte.  Centraal in de grote ‘slaapruimte’ (klamboe) bevindt zich een opstelling met een globe en zijdedoek. Langs de wanden van de ruimte bevinden zich uit papier gesneden tekstelementen van de filosoof Martin Heidegger (uit Vorträge und Aufsätze) aan wie ook de titel van de installatie (ruimte en uitgebreidheid) is ontleend.

The net provides a crispness in the air: space, transparency and the free flow of light are ‘captured’ at the same time. In Hindoe cosmology Indra’s Net is a metaphor for emptiness and consciousness; the fundaments of the universe. The used net is not an arbitrary net; it is a mosquito-net, and thus even more than a physical space of the body, it is the space of sleep, of the mind and of dreams. Micro- and macrocosm merge together. The buzzing and rattling projectors, though even more the brightening and dimming lights and images form a metaphor for the mind, projecting its own world and thus creating it.  –  Are we living in a lucid dream?

Het net verschaft ijlheid: ruimte, transparantie en vrije doorgang voor het licht dat tegelijkertijd ‘gevangen’ wordt. Binnen de Hindoe kosmologie geldt het Net van Indra o.m. als metafoor voor leegte en bewustzijn. Het net is niet een willekeurig net; het is een klamboe, en daarmee meer nog dan de fysieke ruimte van het lichaam, een ruimte van de slaap, van de geest en van de droom. Micro- en macrokosmos versmelten met elkaar. De  zoemende en ratelende projectoren, maar vooral de opdoemende en uitdovende projecties vormen een metafoor voor de geest die zijn/haar wereld projecteert, schépt dus.  –  Are we living in a lucid dream?

If we now arbitrarily select one of these jewels for inspection and look closely at it, we will discover that in its polished surface there are reflected all the other jewels in the net, infinite in number. Not only that, but each of the jewels reflected in this one jewel is also reflecting all the other jewels, so that there is an infinite reflecting process occurring’.

‘Space’ refers to the physical space of natural science, presuming it is homogenous (not one issue has random supremacy over another), isotropic (no reference for direction), continuous (a whole without cavities) and therefore endlessly dividable. This conception of space forms the parameter for measuring and ordering sizes of related objects (spatium et extensio : space and extend), and is in such manner of infinite ‘proportions’. [H.M. Berghs]. Nicola Tesla rejected Einstein ’s ideas by declaring that space doesn’t ‘exist’ whatsoever, and so the concept of curved space is illusory. Likewise Tesla, the German philosopher Heidegger enunciates the invalidity of our commonly accepted conception of ‘space’.  According to him, space is not some kind of a ‘thing’. On the contrary, it is more like a verbe. Space is spacing things, i.e. space liberates places or situations. Space is in no way already present before any given situation; the situation is shaping space, and not vice-versa. Meaning there is not at first hand ‘a’ space in which I can move around, it is on the contrary as a result of my displacements that the perception of space emerges and changes. [free after H.M. Berghs]. Heidegger speaks notably of “Be-wegen”, meaning both “moving around” as well as “providing our surroundings with pathways”.

[H.M Berghs]. Nicola Tesla verwierp de ideeën van Einstein door te verklaren dat er helemaal niet zoiets bestaat als “ruimte”, dus ook geen gekromde ruimte. Heidegger toont eveneens de ongeldigheid van het gangbare concept aan. “Ruimte ‘is’ niet; ze ruimt in, dat wil zeggen maakt plaatsen of situaties vrij. De ruimte is niet voorhanden vooraleer de situatie er is, want ze komt precies door de situatie tot stand. Zo is er niet eerst een ruimte waarin ik me dan pas kan gaan verplaatsen; het is mede door mijn verplaatsing dat zij tot stand wordt gebracht en zich wijzigt”. [H.M. Berghs] Ook spreekt Heidegger nadrukkelijk van be-wegen, dat is ‘de omgeving voorzien van wegen’.
